about

Based on a fable, this song is the tale of a weary old man who finds himself lost in the forest. Just when he thinks he can go no further, the man finds himself at the door of a cottage. The cottage is the home of Old Mother Of Days. She cares for him and gives him a place to rest. By morning he has regained his youth and his energy and turns into the sun.

This is a tale of rest, regeneration, renewal and the power of human kindness. It also represents night turning to day providing the opportunity for a fresh start.

lyrics

Verse 1
Night-time fell upon the old forest.
The trees drew closer & hummed a song.
An old man stumbled through the darkness.
He'd travelled far & he'd travelled long.

Chorus
How he dreamed of a roaring fire,
To ease his mind & rest his weary bones.
All he needed was a little warmth & light
To burn away the deepest, darkest night.

Verse 2
He came upon a tiny cottage
& slowly, slowly he drew night.
By the fire sat an old lady.
He fell to his knees & he cried.

Chorus
For he had dreamed of a roaring fire,
To ease his mind & rest his weary bones.
All he needed was a little warmth & light
To burn away the deepest, darkest night.

Verse 3
The lady took him to the fire
& held him close & said not a word.
Soon enough sleep overcame him.
His mind drifted his vision blurred.

Chorus
As he dreamed of a roaring fire
To ease his mind & rest his weary bones
All he needed was a little warmth & light
To burn away the deepest, darkest night.

Verse 4
As time passed by strange things happened
His hair grew paler & lined with gold.
She could see his strength returning
Just as the whispering trees foretold.

Chorus
Old man to young man and now a child,
Eyes full of wonder & mischief & fun
Just as the night came to greet the morning
He leapt up to the sky & became the sun

Old Mother Of Days with your fire
You eased his mind & his weary bones
You gave him warmth & just enough light
To burn away the deepest, darkest night.

Yes you burned away the deepest, darkest night.

Deepest, darkest night.
