about

Traditional folk song which has been sung all over the British Isles in it's different forms. There are also other versions that have cropped up in America. The tale is of a farmer or ploughman who is visited by the devil & has to give up his wife. This turns out to be bad for the devil as she terrorises them all in hell and gets to go home again. For this version, Kim edited the final verse to show the strength of women.

lyrics

There was an old farmer in Sussex did dwell
& he'd an old wife as many knew well
to me falderol little lawday

The devil he came to the old man at plough
saying one of your family I must have now
to me falderol little lawday

Now it isn't for you nor yet for your son
but that little old wife as you've got at home
to me falderol little lawday

Oh take her, oh take her with all of my heart
& I wish that you may never more part
to me falderol little lawday

So the devil he took the old wife on his back
& he lugged her along like a pedlar's pack
to me falderol little lawday

He trudged along 'til he got to hell's gate
saying here won't you take an old Sussex chap's mate
to me falderol little lawday

There was thirteen imps all dancing in chains
she up with her pattens & beat out their brains
to me falderol little lawday

Two more little devils jumped over the wall
saying turn her out father she'll murder us all
to me falderol little lawday

So he bundled her up on his back amain
& to her old husband he took her again
to me falderol little lawday

I've been a tormenter the whole of my life
but I was never tormented 'til I met your wife
to me falderol little lawday

And now to conclude & make an end
you see that us women are strong even when
we get sent to hell we come straight back again
to me falderol little lawday
