lyrics

As I was going through one of the London streets
A pretty little oyster girl I chanced there for to meet
And across to her basket so nimbly I did trip
“Oh tell me have you got any oysters”.

“Oh yes sir, oh yes sir, oh yes sir” said she
“I’ve some of the finest oysters that ever you did see
And I sell them by one by two by three
And bargain for my basket of oysters”.

So I went unto the landlord “Oh landlord” says I
“Have you got a spare room for the oyster girl and I
That we may go in and so merry, merry be
And bargain for her basket of oysters”.

“Oh yes sir, oh yes sir, oh yes sir” says he
“I have got a spare room for the oyster girl and thee
That you may go in and so merry, merry be
And bargain for her basket of oysters”.

We’d not been in the room scarcely but a half an hour
Before she picked my pockets of fifty pounds and more
And out of the doorway so nimbly she did trip
And left me with her basket of oysters.

So I went unto the landlord “Oh landlord” says I
“Have you seen that oyster girl that comes along with I?
She has picked my pocket of all my money
And left me with her basket of oysters”.

“Oh yes sir, oh yes sir, oh yes sir” says he
“I have seen that oyster girl that comes along with thee.
She has paid me your reckoning and you may go free.
Return unto your basket of oysters”.

I’ve travelled through England, through Scotland and France
But never in my life was I led to such a trance.
So the English girl took the Frenchman in at last
And left him with her basket of oysters.
